God's America ~ Joan Clifton Costner

God's America

(Written upon the return of POWs from Vietnam )

America , lift high your many churches
And raise again the song of mighty God!
Our citizens are back in their own country;
Their steps are found upon their native sod!

Through all the technical negotiations,
Our due respect and praise we give these men.
But we know, without the prayer of all the Christians,
Their safe release would've never ever been.

Someday, we'll learn. Oh, help us, God, to remember
That not one breath we draw against Thy will.
Nations rise and fall, at Thy direction,
And leader come with Your permission still.

Let us learn, again, the art of fasting
And praying for our leaders every day.
Let this nation that is known as Christian.
Be quick to say that God restored today.

For though all men may claim the glorious victory,
Still, in our heart we know it was our God.
For, it was not lifeless bodies they returned to us.
It was the living images of God!

America , lift high your many churches!
Peal out the bells and raise your flag up high!
God brought you forth and laid to you a destiny.
America , with God, will never die!

Prayer For Our Soldiers ~ Joan Clifton Costner

Prayer For Our Soldiers

Dear Father in Heaven, we come today, to the throne of grace and peace, bringing our beloved sons and daughters before you, those serving in far away lands and right here in our own country. Lord, we know they are homesick and worried, and hungry for just a look at the people they love. Comfort their hearts and touch also the heart of those who miss their certain ways, their step, their smile. We
pray You will keep them safe from enemies of freedom and out of harm's way. There are wives, children, mothers and fathers with an emptiness inside, Lord, and we pray for them. Let them feel the touch of your presence as You pass by.
If we could pass a blessing
to them, Lord, like the patriarchs of old blest their children we would not be able to stop, but do bless,
sweet Lord, do keep them
in the hollow of your hand.
Bring them home again, dear Lord, to a land that is still free and where Your Name is
honored, because they gave
the best of themselves for us. Bring them home saying,
"This is my own, my native land!" Let them be met by
honor and dignity and arms that hold them in love.
In Jesus precious Name,
Amen.

The Light of America ~ Joan Clifton Costner

The Light of America

 Like a beautiful jewel on a pedestal,
Like a city set high upon a hill,
Like a Lighthouse shining out from a mountain;
Her very name brings us a thrill!

She’’s the hope for all hopeless people,
Champion of the world in human rights,
A gleam of light for any suppressed nation;
A flood light in the black of night!

Shine on, America . God loves you!
Hold to all you were created for!
Let the hearts of our patriots still carry
Your liberty and hope to distant shores!

You’’ve passed out food to many starving nations,
Sent money, aid, to many foreign lands;
A tremendous task for America ,
For everywhere we turn there’’s outstretched hands!

Still, America hates oppression.
So, she gives until her own lights must turn low.
Send to the world a message true and firm,
For the whole wide world needs to know.

If the lights go out in America ,
You won’’t believe how dark the world would be.
And, the lights that now shine bright and brilliant
Are tended by the likes of you and me!

So, take heart, brother, sister, in America .
Fly our banner high and keep its stripes unfurled.
For, if the lights go out in America , brave heart,
They will go out ... for all the world.
